Community healing. Finding a way to understand Youth, Gangs, Guns. Nature or Nurture

    in Ask a Police Officer

I am confused about our Gangs and guns problem that is affecting so many young black boys. Is it because boys are expected to grow up tough and taught to play with guns or is it that too many guns are available on our streets, and when these young boys get angry the gun helps them to re-enforce their toughness, and they can just shoot each other, like they did when they were young boys playing with toy guns, Bang bang you fall, your dead. Of course, the kid gets up after playing dead for a couple of minutes and the continue to play. Or is it that they feel so hopeless and helpless and they do not care if they live or die. Dreams do not exist, life has no value to them. How can we understand this problem? we have to try to make this a Post Covid Problem, because Life is irreplaceable. And they are our future.

    Good Morning,

Thank you for your comment and for your question ... these are important conversations to have. The reality is that there are many risk factors that lead youth down this path and ultimately our goal is to alleviate as many of them as possible.

We know that these communities are full of great people that are accomplishing great things, and that is the story that needs more attention. Our job is to support these communities, and to encourage them to be advocates for their own neighbourhoods.

The long term, successful solution to this issue must come from within the community members themselves. Project Engage is focused on supporting these communities by providing them with the tools and resources to accomplish this. It can no longer be acceptable for a community to live in fear in their own neighbourhood.

I can assure you that we are committed to doing our part to make that happen, but the real power lies within the community. I would encourage you to continue to use your voice to advocate for change, and to focus on mobilizing the community to do the same.

Thank you again for sharing your passion and your support.
